Infrastructure planning for Gigaclear

Gigaclear provides fibre broadband to rural parts of the UK. We optimised the placement of their network, reducing infrastructure costs, minimising disruption and enabling a faster, more reliable service.

Challenge

Gigaclear provides broadband services to rural parts of the UK. To continue to meet the rising demands of customers, they needed to upgrade their physical infrastructure — laying 0000’s of miles of new fibre to ensure reach, speed and reliability. They chose Satalia to optimise their infrastructure planning.

  • 200,000 properties connected.
  • Covered 30,981 miles.

Solution

We used machine learning, advanced geospatial techniques and optimisation to optimise the placement and routing of their entire fibre network. The objective was to minimise both the cost of serving each property, and the disruption caused by doing so.

We used machine learning to identify the factors — roads, houses, schools — that made some routes unfeasible. Then, using entirely novel geospatial technology, we built slimmed down versions of the maps that contained only the feasible routes. Unlike previous maps, which contained every possible way of laying fibre, our lighter, pre-processed maps were small enough to be used as input for the optimisation algorithm.
